Week One
For my vegetable garden I went out and bought five plastic multi-colored 5-gallon pots from Home Depot and filled them with Miracle-Gro Potting Soil which I also purchased from Home Depot. I put them inside of a pool screen to hopefully protect the vegetables from being eaten by animals. They are also located on the South side of my house in order to provide optimum sunlight. I went with the plastic pots not only because they were cheap but also because they don't retain as much heat as the metal or darker colored pots. It's already very hot here so the goal is try to try and keep the soil a bit cooler to allow the best chance of a successful germination for all of my seeds. I'm looking forward to growing vegetables throughout the course of the semester and I hope to learn the best methods for sustaining these plants so that someday I can grow a variety of plants of my own in a different garden. I hope that I can apply what I learn in this class to many different kinds of plants that may require completely different environments to grow. This way, no matter where I end up in life, I can be sure that I will find some plants that grow in that environment and have confidence in myself to be able to grow these plants successfully.
